TORONTO - A 22-year-old man faces a slew of charges stemming from last week’s shooting that left two women wounded in York University’s student centre.
And Toronto Police say the suspected gunman’s arrest led to the discovery of an alleged drug trafficking ring.
“We were investigating the shooting and it turned into something much bigger,” Const. Victor Kwong said Friday.
He said investigators tracked down Kemon Edwards on Thursday and charged him with eight offences in connection with the March 6 shooting that sent students running for their lives and scurrying under tables.
Two female students were hurt in that incident, which may have been an accidental discharge.
A single gunshot rang out around 10:45 p.m. in the university’s student centre on York Blvd. — near Keele St. and Steeles Ave. W. — striking one woman in her leg.
That victim, Annie Malik, underwent surgery and is recovering. Her friend, Namra Malik, was also hurt when she was hit by shrapnel.
Edwards’ arrest led to the execution of a search warrant at an apartment near Jane St. and Steeles Ave. W., Kwong said.
During that search, officers allegedly found an undisclosed amount of heroin, cocaine, cash and two firearms.
The seizure prompted investigators to lay an additional nine charges against Edwards — mostly for drug-related offences.
Police also made five more arrests while searching the apartment. Three men and two boys face dozens of charges.
Also charged are Dominic Bernard, 20, Alex James, 23, Jesse Dawson, 23, a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy, all of Toronto.
