George Smitherman's missing husband found alive

TORONTO - The missing husband of George Smitherman was found Wednesday morning, but neither police nor the former politician are giving any reason for his disappearance.

Christopher Peloso, 39, was located by police near a rail line at Dupont St. and Lansdowne Ave. just before 11 a.m. He was transported to Toronto Western Hospital as a preventative measure and Smitherman later spoke to media outside.

“The path forward isn’t firmly clear,” Smitherman said, with friend and former Toronto mayor Barbara Hall at his side.

“Except that we know that it’s long and it will be hard and that he, and me, and our family, and our kids especially, will be surrounded by an outpouring of love that would restore anybody’s faith and confidence.”

Ontario’s former deputy premier and Toronto mayoral candidate praised the work of Toronto Police and thanked police dog “Ranger” who found Peloso during a grid search after investigators tracked him using his cellphone signal.

“In every breath and conversation, and there were many, (police) were so compassionate, so thorough and so utterly excited to share the news that Christopher had been found,” Smitherman said.

He took no questions from reporters and did not say why Peloso disappeared.

Const. Victor Kwong said police could not say why Peloso vanished.

“The family has been notified and we won’t be giving any further information about why he went missing,” Kwong said.

Peloso had last been seen Monday around 4 p.m. in the Bathurst St.-Davenport Rd. area. Police had said they were “concerned for his safety,” citing an unspecified medical condition.

Smitherman acknowledged that he will be spending “a fair bit” of time at Toronto Western in the coming days and thanked the press for their help and members of the community for their best wishes.

“We just want to let everyone know that the thoughts and prayers that you’ve had for Christopher have touched us deeply.”
